IĠM donates €1,000 to IFJ safety fund
The IĠM held its annual Malta Journalism Awards on Saturday night at Verdala Castle, a night of celebration for many journalists and media houses.
During the ceremony, IĠM President Matthew Xuereb announced that the money received through the submission fees of this year’s awards will be donated to journalists in Gaza through the IFJ’s Safety Fund.
“The IĠM wants to put its money where its mouth is. For this reason, I am
pleased to announce that, thanks to the contribution of our sponsors, all the
proceeds paid by journalists to participate in these awards will be donated
entirely to a fund administered by the IFJ to help our colleagues in Gaza.”
The IĠM collected €655 in submission fees, but is rounding up the donation to €1,000.
In a short video comment, EFJ Secretary General Ricardo Gutierrez thanked
IĠM for the gesture, saying this means a lot for journalists in Gaza.
“We consider this as a strong signal of solidarity and support,” he said.
This year’s IĠM awards was again held under the auspices of the Office of the President.
A full list of the awardees can be found on IĠM’s website.
