COVID-19: IĠM calls for responsibility from the media and the general public
In view of the current pandemic situation in Malta, the IĠM calls for responsibility both from the media as well as the general public.
The media is responsible of ensuring that information published is correct and gives a clear picture of the actual situation, while ensuring journalistic ethics are adhered to at all times. The IĠM reminds journalists not only to follow the basic practices of journalism, including the confirmation of sources and that the sources are credible, but also to distinguish clearly fact from comment.
The public, in turn, should choose its soure of information wisely and choose sources for their credibility rather than for their appeal to sensation.
At this very delicate stage, in the national interest, journalists need to be even more strict in their application of the basic principles of journalism.
